Canary Islands Tropical Disease and Public Health Research Institute

Tenerife

The Canary Islands Tropical Disease and Public Health Research Institute group is made up of 5 teachers (all with doctorates) and 6 trainees (4 with doctorates and 2 with undergraduate degrees). The group per se began working together in the late 1990s, set up the Institute in 2101 and has designated the molecular biology and immunology of trypanosomatidae and free-living amoebae (genus Acanthamoeba) as it priority line of research. The group provides constant support for the Canary Islands and National Health Systems through diagnosing tropical diseases and conducting molecular epidemiological and phylogenetic studies of intestinal parasites. Since 1998, the group's projects have been continuously funded by the Health Research Fund, based on a series of projects under the auspices of the Autonomous Region and agreements entered into with companies. In the last 10 years, it has published over 50 papers, for the most part in journals included in the JCR.
