In recent years, the research team at the Tropical Medicine and Malaria Research Unit, belonging to the National Centre for Tropical Medicine-Carlos III Institute of Health, has taken part in a dozen projects, both domestic and international (EU, Health Research Fund, Spanish International Aid Agency, Madrid Autonomous Region). It is the co-ordinator of the Equatorial Guinea Reference Centre for the Control of Endemic Diseases, with an annual budget of 1,180,000 Euros funded by the Spanish International Aid Agency (Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional-AECI), and is made up of over a score of persons ranging from qualified research personnel (public health experts, microbiologists, entomologists and holders of university nursing diplomas) to others who perform technical and work tasks, such as drivers, security staff and laboratory technicians). The activities of the group and the above laboratory include research applied to addressing the problems of malaria, sleeping sickness, AIDS, TB, nutrition, Programme for the Integral Care of Prevalent Childhood Diseases (Programa de Atención Integral de las Enfermedades Prevalentes de la Infancia - AIEPI) and responsibility for the National Reference Laboratory.
